Introduction: I am a fleshy stemmed perennial herb and my aroma can be described as a pungent combination of oregano and thyme. I'm known as Ajwain ("अजवायन") in Hindi. Besides being edible, my leaves are often used for their medicinal properties and can help treat conditions such as a cough, fever, indigestion, asthma and migraines, as well as, relieve respiratory ailments, reduce anxiety and stress, and can aid in skincare.

Use Me In: Chutneys, Pakoras, Rasam, Raitas and Herbal Teas

What I Need To Grow:

  • The soil to be slightly moist, but not too wet
  • Ample sunlight with partial shade
  • The fresh leaves can be snipped off during spring and summer, before they start to develop bristly hair, using scissors. The flower to be hand-picked when they are opening

Growing Tips: Plant me in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Consider growing me in pots or directly in the garden with 12-18 inches of spacing with other plants for ample airflow and healthy growth.

Transplantation Tips: If you're transplanting me, choose a location with well-draining soil and provide adequate spacing between plants (12-18 inches) for my roots to be able to spread out. Be gentle with my roots, and water thoroughly after transplanting to help me acclimate to my new surroundings.
